The first floor exhibition space at Gallery on the Green will soon be accessible to everyone, now that a ramp designed by Board Member and architect Kent McCoy has been unanimously approved by the Town Planning and Zoning Commission. Plans are to have it functional for the opening of photographer Andrew Buck’s exhibit at the Gallery on the Green, which will run from April 20 – May 20, 2012. “It was a long haul”, McCoy said, “from initial planning, to construction documents, to permitting from the building department, fire marshal and planning and zoning. Like many historic structures, our building was non-conforming to current zoning requirements, so there were several hurdles that needed to be cleared before we could break ground.” The ramp is being built by volunteers from the Gallery, with Board Member Steph Dascanio acting as the project manager and Member Dick Ivany assisting. Funding was initiated by a $1000 gift from the Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund and has been supplemented by generous gifts from gallery members and members of the public.
The annual Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Invitational Exhibition at the Gallery will feature a retrospective of four decades of Mr. Buck’s photographs. A gallery talk by the artist will be held at 5 p.m. followed by an opening reception from 6 -9 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. As always, receptions at the gallery are free and the public is warmly invited to attend. Co-curators Cecil Adams and Walter Kendra, working closely with the artist, have selected and organized the most representative images from Mr. Buck's body of work. The Gallery on the Green, Connecticut's longest continuously-running artists' guild, is located at the corner of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 in Canton.
